In June 2017 I traveled to Montevideo, Uruguay with Wanderlust Theatre Company to present Memory: Los Musicales de Andrew Lloyd Webber with La Banda Sinfónica de Montevideo and a chorus made up of seven local choirs. We performed two sold out shows at the historic Teatro Solís and then took the full production to two free performances at community centers outside the city center.
The purpose of the concert was a cultural exchange, sharing the music of Broadway in an area where it is less familiar, and also bringing a large scale symphonic production to communities that would not normally get the chance to experience such events.
The people of Montevideo instantly made us feel at home. Everyone we met, both professionally and even just wandering around town, was so warm and kind. Members of the chorus not only offered to show us around town, but also invited us to their homes to experience traditional asado (not your average backyard cookout!). I ate my annual meat allowance in one weekend!
